Featuring short stories from the collection The Power of Light by the great Yiddish author Isaac Bashevis Singer and both familiar and rare Yiddish, Ladino, and Hebrew songs!
Tales of the Klezmorim
Cantor Becky Khitrik, chazzan and member of the Boston-based klezmer band Klezwoods, treated participants to a listening journey of the roots and shoots of klezmer, following the evolution of klezmer from its inception to its many possibilities today.
Ladino 101
Sarah Aroeste’s Ladino 101 workshop is an interactive, mixed-media program that integrates a brief history of Sephardic Jewry with Ladino language, music, and written traditions. Participants learned how to read Ladino words, sing some Ladino songs, and more!
My husband is in America: Yiddish poetry of place and displacement
Professor Jessica Kirzane shared poetry that captures the emotional turmoil of the migration experience. We read a selection of poets (in English translation), some widely celebrated and some more obscure and uncover the anger, pain, longing, and hope that their writing expresses.
Yiddish Theater Past and Present
A brief history of Yiddish theater, from its origins in the 1870s to its contemporary expressions (Indecent, Yiddish Fiddler, etc.) today. Professor Debra Caplan, a Yiddish theater historian, will offer a birds-eye view of Yiddish theater history, an overview of its greatest plays and playwrights, and an analysis of the present and future of the Yiddish stage. Klezmer for All: Sounds and Story to Light Up Your Winter
Shirim Klezmer Orchestra introduced us to the joy of klezmer music, the lively party music of the Eastern European Jews, including audience participation and a traditional Jewish story with musical accompaniment. Shirim was joined by Cantor Vera Broekhuysen and Rabbi Louis Polisson. A great afternoon for friends and families of all ages!
Yiddish Song Workshop with Adah Hetko and Kaia Berman Peters of Levyosn
Led by Levyosn ("Leviathan") members Adah Hetko (voice, guitar) and Kaia Berman Peters (voice, accordion). Adah and Kaia love to share their passions for Yiddish song and klezmer music, and sing in community.
