Temple Emanu-El Religious School

The Temple Emanu-El Religious School is a warm and inviting place where children from age two through high school can come to learn what it means to be Jewish. Through studies of the Hebrew language, t'filot (prayer), holiday celebrations, history, life cycle events, crafts, and music, your children will be involved in activities that lead them to discover the many facets of Judaism. Through these interactions, your children will grow into adults who identify with the Jewish community here and around the world.

Our program begins with TAPT (Toddlers and Parents Together
), perfect for 2- and 3-year-old children and their parent(s). TAPT meets on Sunday mornings from 9:00–10:30 am. Children will learn about Judaism through song, art, stories, special snacks, and child-centered activities.

Students in pre-kindergarten through grade 2 learn about Jewish holidays, Hebrew letters, bible stories, and Torah study from wonderfully creative teachers who have had years of experience with children of these ages. A few times per year, students and their parents will gather for a special “Torah Together” program. These grades meet from 9:00 am–12 noon on Sunday mornings.

Grades 3 through 7 also meet on Sunday mornings from 9:00 am–12 noon. In these grades, students begin an in-depth study of the Hebrew language, learning to both read and write Hebrew. They will become more fluent in their ability to read and understand the meanings of Hebrew prayers for various holiday, daily, and Shabbat services. By 7th grade, your children will be prepared to become b'nei mitzvah. Grades 3 through 7 participate in services on Sunday mornings and chugim (enrichment activities), as well as music classes with Cantor Vera. Additional areas of study include Israel, Jewish holidays, feelings toward God, becoming a “mensch,” and in 7th grade, discussing and analyzing Torah text and learning about the Holocaust.

Our High School program for students in grades 8 through 12 meets on Sunday afternoons from 12 noon–1:30 pm. Class begins with a pizza/salad lunch.  Eighth graders study comparative religions (while enjoying some sweet treats), 9th graders choose and support a social action project and prepare for their confirmation, and our 10th through 12th graders discuss current topics related to Judaism, ethics, and values and prepare for Jewish college life. Many of these students also belong to HEFTY, our Temple youth group.

Thank you for the opportunity to present our Religious School program to you. Our staff of seasoned and dedicated teachers will enhance your children's Jewish education with creativity and enthusiasm. If you have any questions or would like to set up a tour, please contact the Religious  School office at RSAdminAsst@TempleEmanu-El.org.
