Temple Emanu-El Religious School
|
The Temple Emanu-El Religious School is a warm and inviting place where children from age two through high school can come to learn what it means to be Jewish. Through studies of the Hebrew language, t'filot (prayer), holiday celebrations, history, life cycle events, crafts, and music, your children will be involved in activities that lead them to discover the many facets of Judaism. Through these interactions, your children will grow into adults who identify with the Jewish community here and around the world.
Pre-K through grade one focus on Jewish holidays, Hebrew letters, Bible stories, and Torah.
Grades two through seven learn how to read Hebrew and then build on the Hebrew literacy they’ve acquired in previous years. They also learn Hebrew prayers for various weekday, holiday, and Shabbat services. By the time the students have completed the grade six Hebrew curriculum, they will have reached the appropriate level to begin to prepare for becoming b’nei mitzvah. The Judaica curriculum in grades two through seven includes the following topics: ethics, Israel, holidays (in greater depth), Jewish history, theology (God), the prophets, and how to be a mensch (good person). The students may also take several field trips, such as visiting the local mikveh at Mayyim Hayyim, participating in a Jewish scavenger hunt in Brookline, or taking a trip to a Jewish cemetery.
Our high school program is for students in grades eight through twelve. After beginning their morning with breakfast together, the students focus on social justice through a Jewish lens. Our ninth grade confirmation students will also meet separately throughout the year with clergy. Assuming that it is safe to do so, the ninth through twelfth graders will take a trip to New York City in the spring for an exploration of Jewish New York. This trip is a highlight of the students’ year as a bonding experience and culmination of their Jewish learning.
Thank you for the opportunity to present our Religious School program to you. Our staff of seasoned and dedicated teachers will enhance your children's Jewish education with creativity and enthusiasm. If you have any questions or would like to set up a tour, please contact the Religious School office at [email protected].
