Bi-Monthly Message of Debbi Levasseur, Religious School Director
November/December 2019

With the fall holidays behind us, we now look to November and December and all that awaits us. Let’s put our sweaters on, crunch some fallen leaves, sip a cup of hot cocoa, and see what’s happening in the Religious School.
November starts out with a swashbuckling Family Shabbat service on Friday, November 1, at 6:00 pm. The theme: Pirates and Mermaids! We will have a lovely but shortened Shabbat service, followed by a Share-a-Shabbat potluck dinner, games, crafts, and a pirate/mermaid photo shoot. Everyone is welcome—argh!
November also begins with a field trip on Sunday, November 3, to The Magic Brush in Tewksbury. Students in grades pre-K and up and their parents will paint ceramic Kiddush cups. The Magic Brush is always a fun trip, creating wonderful memories for all, and the ceramic objects our students paint will likely become family heirlooms.
The second part of the B’nei Mitzvah Seminar, designed to help families get ready for the b’nei mitzvah process, will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 4:00–6:00 pm. The seminar explains the nuts and bolts of the simchah and will answer your many questions.
On November 20, our grade six and seven students will be taking the food collected from our food drive to Emmaus, the Haverhill food pantry. Students will learn about Emmaus, Ruth’s Place, and social services the City of Haverhill provides for those less fortunate.
On November 23, at 9:30 am, we have the opportunity to celebrate a Saturday morning Shabbat service. This service will be in lieu of class time on Sunday, November 24. It is inspiring to see our students and their parents praying together, as our students recite the prayers they learn in class in an intergenerational Shabbat service. Our younger students in pre-K through first grade will help lead a special Friday night Shabbat service on December 13.
Everyone is invited to our Chanukah party on Sunday, December 15, at 10:30 am. Our favorite entertainer, Aaron Tornberg, will again regale us with happy Chanukah songs and other Jewish musical delights. The students will also make joyful Chanukah music. We will, of course, serve potato latkes with sour cream and applesauce, as well as other delicious foods provided by the PTO and Temple members. Join us for singing, spinning the dreidel, and eating Chanukah foods.
